Questions and Answers about Hand-Feeding

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about ZuPreem® Embrace® Hand-Feeding Formulas. Call a ZuPreem Customer Care representative at 1-800-345-4767 to get answers to any additional questions.

Q: I’ve noticed that Embrace formulas have a really smooth consistency compared to the hand-feeding formula I used before. I also notice it seems to mix up differently.
A: Yes, Embrace Hand-Feeding Formulas do have a smooth consistency that stays mixed in the bowl, feeding utensil and crop for safe delivery of essential nutrients. The formulas do mix a bit differently, and we recommend you read the complete feeding and mixing instruction on the back of the bag or bucket, or download this PDF: Embrace Mixing Instructions Chart (128kb).

Q: What should I do if I fed the formula before it had completely thickened?
A: In baby birds that are older than 2 weeks of age, there may be no action required. Usually chicks of this age can easily digest formula that is fed a bit on the thick side. In smaller chicks, and where a slowing of crop motility is noticed, feed small amounts of warm water. Closely monitor digestion. If you are unsure how to manage this situation, contact your avian professional.

Q: How would I know if I fed the formula when it was too hot? If so, what should I do?
A: When formula is fed that is hot enough to accidentally burn the crop or the throat of the bird, you will notice a redness and swelling of the crop immediately or within three days, depending on the burn’s severity. Many chicks will become “shy” of being fed if they have suffered from a crop burn. Immediate veterinary attention is necessary to repair or remove damaged tissue. This situation can be avoided by carefully monitoring the temperature of the prepared formula prior to feeding. Embrace formulas should be fed only when the temperature is between 100º–110º F. Take care if heating in a microwave oven where hot spots can develop.

Q: What causes "stunting" or slow growth of baby birds?
A: Typically, stunting is caused by insufficient nutrition. Usually the continued feeding of formula that is prepared "too thin" or is fed too infrequently is the actual cause. This can be avoided by ensuring that the formula is the proper consistency prior to feeding and the feeding frequency is adequate. If your chick is not gaining weight properly, consult your avian professional to determine if there is an underlying health problem that may not be related to nutrition.

Q: What causes a slowing of the crop, or a total stoppage (stasis) of digestion of the crop contents?
A: There are many reasons a baby bird's crop will slow or stop digesting. Simple causes include feeding food that is too thick or housing chicks at temperatures that are too cool or too hot. Other causes include bacterial infections, sour crop, avian viruses, or serious organ or system failures. Seek veterinary advice immediately if the problem does not resolve quickly.

Q: Can I switch to a ZuPreem Embrace Hand-Feeding Formula if I am already using another hand-feeding formula?
A: In most cases, a switch in hand-feeding formulas is easy and creates no problems. It is suggested that you feed an Embrace formula a little on the thin side of consistency for the first few feedings, to allow the digestive tract to adjust to the new product. The switch to an Embrace formula can be made over 24 - 48 hours by mixing the Embrace formula half-and-half with the other product (after both products have been prepared according to package directions).

Q: Can a baby bird be kept on a hand-feeding formula too long?
A: Generally speaking, it is best to wean a baby bird from a hand-feeding formula when it is fully feathered and begins to fledge. Because all hand-feeding formulas are designed to support rapid growth stages, we do not suggest that older birds be maintained on these formulas. Certain birds may develop physical problems if sustained on a hand-feeding formula for inappropriate periods of time. Prolonged use of a hand-feeding formula beyond the normal weaning age or the excessive feeding of a hand-feeding formula may contribute to obesity.

Q: How can I find out more about hand feeding and caring for my bird?
A: There are a number of good reference books that can help you learn more about hand feeding your bird as well as caring for your bird through the weaning process. We strongly suggest you research how to provide the best care for your bird throughout its life.
